Charity Race Night Success
£1629.00 raised
On Friday 7th November 2008 a race night was held at “The Chez”. Many people attended to support the good cause of raising much needed funds for Animal Welfare.
Everyone had an enjoyable evening and a total of £1629.00 was raised! Well done to John Martel (shop & kennels manager) for being the compare for the evening, Tim Butler for helping with the betting side of things, several committee members for planning and organizing the event and a huge thank you to the staff at The Chez for their support and hard work on the evening. Thank you must also go to those companies and people who generously sponsored a race and to those who donated raffle prizes.

In June we held a celebration event, welcoming back to the island Margaret Cosby who helped start the AAWS some 50+ years ago and Nick Blompied who was of course our vet for many years. It was lovely to welcome them back to the island and we know that they both thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many of their island friends. Thanks to our many generous supporters the event raised nearly £1000, a tremendous achievement. See pictures above. |

One of our wildlife casualties, a lesser black-backed seagull, has developed a taste for the finer foods in life. Not for him cat food and scraps – he distinctly prefers smoked salmon and prawns. Mikey, as he has now been named, came into the AAWS with an injured wing and was seriously undernourished. Thanks to Dave Burrows’ skilful attention and his fine diet he is returning to full strength and should soon be able to return to the great outdoors.

The AAWS has recently named two honorary life members in recognition of their tremendous support for all that we do. Our first ever honorary life member is Simon Martin of Channel Windows who so generously replaced all the windows in the AAWS buildings. These not only make the buildings look much smarter, they might also help keep our heating bills down! Simon is a great animal lover with a menagerie of dogs, cats and other pets at his home in Guernsey.
Our second honorary life member is Margaret Cosby to mark her recent visit to the island and to acknowledge all her sterling work some 50+ years ago in establishing the AAWS. Since then she and her late husband Noel have been stalwart and generous supporters of the society, without whom the society would not be where it is today.

After a recent review of the membership, we have decided to establish a new membership category. For only £15 per year you can now become a Friend of AAWS. We feel this may be particularly attractive to non pet-owners on the island who want to support the animal welfare in some way - as we know many do. Full membership is now £30 per household and members are entitled to discounts in the shop, the clinic and the kennels. Application forms for full or friends membership are available from the AAWS in Le Val or click here to download.
